The Layer of Your Birth Chart Most People Overlook
“You have chutzpah…” My wonderful integrative and spiritual doctor told me during one of my recent sessions with him. I know zero Yiddish, so he went on to explain what it meant to me. Essentially, I’m not someone to be messed with. That was the gist of the overall definition 😂
The astrologer in me couldn’t help but think about how my natal Moon is in Leo in my first house, opposing Mars (the planet of war) and Mercury (the planet of communication). If you blend a fire Moon with a communication bomb, I think somewhere in there is chutzpah?
Now, at the ripe age of 45, I have had many years to learn that I need to take a few breaths before I say certain things. And I think I’ve refined my communication style over the years.
But I’ve met other people whose natal Moons are in Leo, and they weren’t exactly like me. So why is that? It’s because astrology as a practice is so incredibly layered. If you are an astrologer, you’ve essentially signed yourself up for a lifetime of learning. One of the practices I love to layer into my readings is using the natal Moon phase to help color the overall vibe or tone of the entire chart. That’s why two people who both have their natal Moons in Leo might have two very different ways of expressing and approaching life. One person’s Moon phase could be in the Full Moon (like mine) and they could be really focused on achievement and partnerships. And the other might have theirs in the Balsamic phase, where they are more introverted and quiet in their overall approach to life. The planetary aspects and houses also play a key role in interpretations like these, but we won’t get into them today.
The natal moon phase is not just a modifier of your Moon sign. It sets the pulse for the entire chart. Every placement, every sign, every house is colored by it. That is the distinction that makes this layer more significant than people realize, and it is what justifies why someone should care about finding their phase at all. It goes beyond pop-culture astrology, offering distinct tones and arcs for your entire life.
Today, I am going to talk about all 8 of the Moon phases, what they mean in astrology, and how to find yours in your birth chart. For all the astrology connoisseurs out there, you know, those of you who have a screenshot of your birth chart in your photos, I will teach you how to calculate the phase of your natal Moon using your own birth chart. Disclaimer: I use Whole Signs, so if that’s not your chosen house system, my instructions won’t apply to you.

If you don’t know how to look up your birth chart but you want to learn, I have a free guide that shows you how to look up your Sun, Moon, and rising signs, and it provides over 20 pages of detailed interpretation. Download it for free, watch the quick 15-minute how-to video, and you’ll be ready to learn how to calculate your natal Moon phase in the next section of this post.
Note: If you simply have no desire to look up your own chart, I found a website that will calculate the Moon phase based on your birth date and time. I tested it on my own birthday, and it was accurate. That said, I am not affiliated with the site, so make sure to cross-reference it with other sources to be sure it’s accurate. Here is the link to that site. The phase of the Moon and the sign of the Moon are two different things, and you can still use the phase to get a lot of great information from this post. Simply use the linked site to look up the phase of the Moon when you were born, and skip to the section of this post that interprets the 8 Moon phases.
Now, as I previously mentioned, astrology is sooooo layered. There are so many moving parts, and unfortunately, there’s not a quick and easy way to get a professional style interpretation from a post like this. That’s called job security for us astrologers! Not even AI will do it accurately. Trust me, I’ve tried it with my own chart, and it hallucinates interpretations for planetary placements that don’t exist in my chart. So have fun with this post, but know that a real reading from a trained professional astrologer will add so many additional nuances, providing a custom-tailored interpretation. An astrologer will look at what your Moon is aspecting, the house your Moon is in, and whether you have a day chart or a night chart, etc.
All of that said, the Moon phase of your natal Moon truly does paint the overall tone of your chart; in turn, it paints a picture of the overall tone of you. It’s like the arc of your life story. So I promise this will be valuable and useful information. I just always have to give my astrology disclaimer because a real reading is such an incredible experience and a great investment if you’re interested in one.
The next section is for those of you who already know your Moon sign. If you still don’t know where your natal Moon is located in your chart, use my free guide to find it, or call your best astrologer buddy to have them tell you.

How to Find Your Natal Moon Phase in Your Birth Chart
Before we get into what each phase means, let me walk you through how to find yours in your birth chart. Note: I use Whole Signs as my house system; ensure you use Whole Signs as your house system so my instructions work for you. Pull up your birth chart and follow the instructions below to calculate the phase of your Moon.
Every whole sign contains 30 degrees. To find your natal Moon phase, you will count the total number of degrees from your Sun to your Moon, moving counterclockwise through the chart, which is the natural order of the zodiac. I created a guide using my own chart below. Use it to help guide you visually through the steps.
Step 1:
- Find your Sun and your Moon in your birth chart. Note the degrees they are both at in each sign. Example from visual guide: My Sun is at 1 degree of Aquarius and my Moon is at 22 degrees of Leo.
Step 2:
- Starting at your Sun, subtract 29 from the degree your Sun is in. In my chart, my Sun is at 1 degree of Aquarius, so I subtract 29 – 1, and that gives me 28. Note the number and keep moving counterclockwise through your chart.
Step 3:
- Count 30 degrees for each full sign between your Sun and your Moon, moving counterclockwise through the zodiac. In my chart, I counted 30 degrees for each sign from Aquarius until I reached Leo, which is where my Moon is located.
Step 4:
- Once you reach the sign your Moon is in, add the degree your Moon is at within that sign. My Moon is at 22 degrees of Leo, so I add 22 to the overall total.
Step 5:
- Add all of those numbers together. If you are using my chart as an example, it would look like this: 28 (Sun degree minus 29) + [30 * 5] (all empty houses) + 22 (Degree of Moon) = 200. Once you have the total, note it and move to the next section.
*It is important you start at your Sun and move counterclockwise to your Moon. If you do not follow this direction, your calculation will be wrong.

Use the visual guide and start at the Sun. Follow the instructions, moving counterclockwise through the chart, adding all the degrees until you reach the Moon.
The 8 Natal Moon Phases and What They Mean in Astrology
Now that you have your total, use it to find your natal Moon phase below. Each phase lists the degree range it covers. Find where your total falls, and that is your phase.
If you already know your natal Moon phase, simply find it in the section below for a detailed description.
One thing worth noting before you read: each phase carries an elemental quality. When you find your phase, look at how that element interacts with the element of your natal Moon sign. If your Moon is in an air sign and your phase also carries an air quality, you have multiple layers of that energy working together, which makes it a more prominent force in your chart. If your Moon is in a fire sign but your phase carries a water quality, you will likely be more measured and intentional in your approach than someone with a fire Moon in a fire phase.
One final note: if your degree total lands within 1 to 5 degrees of the boundary between two phases, read both interpretations and go with the one that resonates. The transition between phases is not always a hard line, and you may find that the phase just before or just after yours describes you more accurately.
This is one of the ways the natal Moon phase adds nuance that the Moon sign alone cannot give you. And why I love using it to shape the tone overall of the person I am doing a reading for.

Ready to Take Your Natal Moon Phase Interpretation Further?
When I learned my Moon phase, I was astonished at how layered certain topics and lessons were showing in my chart. I learn everything through “the other.” (Full Moon phase.) Coupled with a stellium in the 7th house, I am constantly learning and growing through partnerships, friendships, and relationships. And while the Aquarius in me wants freedom and independence from this ongoing lesson, my Moon phase reminds me what my soul came here to excavate. I have learned so much about myself through the lens of the other, and I know I am on my path.
If you found your Moon phase and it did not resonate at all, first make sure your calculation is accurate and check whether you fall within 1 to 5 degrees of another phase. As always, use your own discernment. If it still does not resonate, go with your own intuition. You will always know yourself best.
